BB - ‘Summer on the Nene’

Who was ‘BB’? A local author, artist, and naturalist and one of the most gifted of nature writers, Denys Watkins - Pitchford was born in 1905 in Lamport Rectory and lived for many years in retirement at the Round House at Sudborough.

​A man who loved Northamptonshire, its countryside, and all country matters; his beautifully crafted book, Summer on the Nene recounts a 1960s’ journey on his motor cruiser, meandering the tranquil byways of the Nene with wonderful descriptions and illustrations of the Northamptonshire countryside. 

Many of us will have fond childhood memories of BB’s “Little Grey Men” – those gnomes who made an epic river journey that delighted generations of young readers.
